Responsible Adult

I was a pretty bad kid during school
Skipping class, missing homework are the norm among others
Fast forward 20 years and I am now working in the corporate sector

I did what I want when I want
Now I ask for permission to take a break
Is this what it means to be a responsible adult?

Chief Executive Strategies - The Emperor's New Slides

Hire the best copywriter and graphic artist you can afford. It doesn't matter if your ideas don't make sense or the numbers don't add up. If it looks great on presentation slides with a somewhat coherent narrative, it is all good. Throw in some industry buzzwords for good measure.

Chief Executive Strategies - Kill the Goose

Spend an inordinate amount of money to increase sales/users/market. Pick up the nice bonus and move on. Kick the expense problem down the road for the next chief executive. By the time someone realize the goose is dead, it won't be your problem.

70 years

On average, we spent 5 years in childhood.
On average, we spent 17 years in education.
On average, we spent 34 years in work.
On average, we spent 15 years in retirement.

We spent our childhood pursuing bugs and bees.
We spent our youth understanding the world.
We spent our adulthood climbing the ladder.
We spent our final years pursuing happiness.

The math does not add up.

Job Security

If you think your corporate job gives you security, think again. The streams corporate layoff news never ends. The C-suite that made the bad decisions are given the golden handshakes while the working class are given the pink slips.

Restaurants that doesn’t add a 10% service charge @ Cyberjaya.

I initially thought of compiling a list of restaurants in Cyberjaya that add a 10% service charge. However, thinking a bit further, misleading pricing or not, it is up to the business owners how they want to run their restaurants. Instead, I decided to acknowledge restaurateurs who are honest with their food pricing.

  1. Sushi Zanmai @ D’Pulze
  2. The Grocers Canteen @ Jaya Grocer
  3. Magkuk Ayam @ D’Pulze
  4. Chennai Spice
  5. Pastribella @ Tamarind Sq
  6. Lauk Kampung @ Tamarind Sq

P/S

  1. I'm listing Cyberjaya  restaurants because it is an area I'm familiar with.
  2. This is not a food review. You’ll have to judge the quality of food for yourself.
  3. The list is only for restaurants in Cyberjaya. I didn’t check if the restaurants add a 10% service charge in their other branches.
  4. I excluded fast food restaurants as the 10% service charge should not apply.
  5. This is a growing list. I'll add to them as I visit more restaurants.

10% Service Charge

Why some restaurants in Malaysia add a 10% service charge to the final bill? The 10% service charge is often not reflected in menu prices. You will see it only in the final tally in the receipt. To be fair, these restaurants usually state the 10% service charge in fine print at the bottom of their menu. But why fine print the 10% service charge and not include them in the food prices?

Is this misleading pricing? The government certainly thinks so for the airline industry. Air Asia and Air Asia X was fined RM 160,000 each in 2018 for not indicating the final price of airfares1 (1). However, it is allowed in hospitality industry (2). Why the double standard?

The Customs Department website states that "service charges can be a replacement for tipping charge though not necessarily so". A few things don’t sit quite right with me with the Customs Department's statement.

  1. If it is tipping, it should be optional and commensurate with the level of service satisfaction.
  2. Restaurants are not required to pay out the 10% to the staffs. There is no transparency on whether the 10% is paid out to the workers with most restaurants. Likely, restaurateurs will book the 10% as revenue.
  3. If the 10% service charge is part of the cost of doing business, all the more it should be reflected in the pricing.

I certainly feel these restaurants are out to mislead with lower menu pricing to entice consumers to patronize them or order more and slap on the 10% later. I'll be exercising my rights as a consumer and vote with my wallet. I will be avoiding restaurants that charge the 10% service charge. This can be daunting as the 10% service charge is a "standard practice" in many restaurants in Malaysia.
